Study and practical training of several rhythms from the choro
universe - polka, maxixe, waltz, schottisch etc. - and its branches,
like samba and frevo. Study of the repertoire of each period
and its history.
Prerequisites
Reading chord symbols; good technique on the instrument.
Students must bring
Music notation paper, pencil, eraser, music stand and instrument.
Cavaquinho

Jayme Vignoli
This course provides the basis for accompaniment with
the cavaquinho for different Brazilian rhythms from the
Choro point of view, using as main references the style
of Canhoto and Jonas.
Prerequisites
Reading chord symbols; basic technique on the instrument.

The woodwinds courses aim to develop the Choro repertoire and
its technical and interpretative aspects to form soloists in the
"Regional" and "Roda de Choro" environment. Melodic and harmonic
studies will be made with the instrument and on the repertoire.
Techniques of articulation, ornamentation, counterpoint and
improvisation are also included.
Prerequisites
Good technique on the instrument. Reading musical notation and
basic knowledge of harmony are desired, but not necessary.
Students must bring
Music stand and instrument.
Mandolin
Pedro Amorim
This course will approach technical aspects of the instrument,
such as posture, peak movements, scales, arpeggios, as well as
aspects of the Choro language: phrases, improvisation and
ornamentation - everything that comes with working on the repertoire.
Prerequisites
Be familiar with the instrument. Reading music notation is desirable,
but not necessary.
Students must bring
Music stand and instrument.
Pandeiro
Celsinho Silva
The objective of the course is to work on the basis of pandeiro
playing, using the school developed by Celsinho Silva and
Jorginho do Pandeiro. Basic Choro rhythms as well as other
genres from this musical universe will be explored.
Prerequisites
Good technique on the instrument. A limited numbers of beginners
will be accepted.
Students must bring
Pandeiro (with a skin head).
Percussion
Oscar Bolão
This course will focus on the practice of band percussion,
using instruments like caixa (snare drum), bumbo (bass drum),
pratos de choque (cymbals), and bateria (drum set). Musical
genres like maxixe, dobrado, polka, samba, waltz etc. will be
explored with exercises developed for each instrument.
Prerequisites
Rhythm reading; basic technique on at least one of the above
mentioned instruments.
Students must bring
Music stand, percussion sticks (for drum set students).
It is desirable that each student bring his/her own instrument.
Piano / Accordion
Cristóvão Bastos
The course is focused on the development of the choro
language on the piano/accordion. Different accompaniment
patterns, solos, chord formation, etc. will be explored.
Prerequisites
Reading musical notation and chord symbols; good technique on
the instrument.
Students must bring
Music notation paper, pencil, eraser, music stand and instrument
(keyboard with amplifier or accordion).
Trumpet

For students with a good technique on the instrument.
The objective is working with the Choro repertoire
written for the trumpet and arranged for several different ensembles.
Prerequisites
Reading musical notation and chord symbols; good technique
on the instrument.
Students must bring
Music notation paper, pencil, eraser, music stand and instrument.
Trombone / Tuba / Bombardino

The course will focus on technical aspects of the instrument
and the Choro repertoire. For students who already have a good
technique on the instrument.
Prerequisites
Reading musical notation and chord symbols; good
technique on the instrument.

Samba-Choro Singing

This course is a training for a specific musical style:
samba-choro. With a repertoire including composers like
Bororó, Noel Rosa, Vadico, Geraldo Pereira, Claudionor Cruz,
Paulinho da Viola, among others, interpretative aspects
will be explored.
Prerequisites
Previous experience as a singer. Candidates must send a
track with a sample of their singing (MP3, CD or tape).
Samba-Choro Choir

With this workshop, students will be in contact with group
singing, through the dynamic process of preparing a repertoire
of songs in two, three and four voices. Tuning, dynamics, rhythm,
posture and the practice of combining voices will be explored and
developed using songs linked to the large tradition of Brazilian
Popular Music, more specifically choro and samba.
Prerequisites
Previous experience as a singer. Candidates must send a track with
a sample of their singing (MP3, CD or tape).
