About the Festival

Instituto Casa do Choro produces, in February 2008, the IV National Festival of
Choro, at the town of São Pedro (SP). The Festival is a nine-day event
that offers courses, workshops, concerts, lectures, videos, etc.,
all related to music, 24 hours a day. The fourth edition will celebrate
Canhoto, cavaquinho player and leader of a "regional" group of
great importance to Brazilian popular music, and choro in
particular, on the 20th century.
The National Festival of Choro is an intensive version of Escola
Portátil de Música (Portable School of Music). Established in
2000 in Rio de Janeiro, Escola Portátil is a reference in
popular music education. In 2007 it has 600 students that,
once a week, have classes with some of the greatest
musicians of the present.
The school offers comprehensive musical training
(both theory and practice), allowing graduates to work
in any musical genre. Everything is taught through Choro,
the main urban instrumental popular music of Brazil,
that reaches its third century with an increasing number
of players and fans all over the world.
