Practical Harmony and Analysis
Marcílio Lopes and
Pedro Paes
A practical course where classical Choro harmonies will be
played and analysed.
Pré-requisitos
Reading chord symbols.
Students must bring
Music notation paper, pencil, eraser, music stand and instrument.
Counterpoint applied to Choro
Bia Paes Leme
Counterpoint technique applied to melodic elaboration
and bass line creation, as a second line to the given
melodies, always using Choro's characteristic style.
Prerequisites
Fairly good knowledge of reading written music, in harmony
(chord formula, chord symbol, tensions, diatonic chords, modal
interchange, secondary chords) and some familiarity with
the rhythmic peculiarities of choro.
Students must bring
Music notation paper, pencil, eraser, music stand and instrument.
Choro composition
Maurício Carrilho and
Cristovão Bastos
Comparative analysis of several rhythmic patterns present
in the universe of choro. Study and harmonic analysis of
fundamental compositions. Harmonic and melodic creation exercises.
Prerequisites
Good reading and writing music notation, good knowledge
of harmony.

Music notation paper, pencil, eraser, music stand and instrument.
Arrangement - basic level
Jayme Vignoli
This course will present the arrangement possibilities
for choro groups, considering historic evolution, through the
study of important aspects: instrumental formation, form,
composition, styles, idiom, counterpoint, harmonization,
re-harmonization. Students will also listen to recordings
following the musical score and analyze interpretation
and/or arrangement. The course will work as an arrangement
laboratory where students write and play their own arrangements.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of functional harmony (major, minor, dominant,
diminished and half diminished chords, along with their relationship
in chord patterns); some knowledge of music theory (melodic intervals
and the tonal system); sight reading: rhythms, melodies and chord symbols.
Students must bring
Music notation paper, pencil, eraser, music stand and instrument.
Arrangement - advanced level
Proveta
The course will present arrangement possibilities for different
formations, from a choro perspective. It will be an experimental
space where students write and play their own arrangements.
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of harmony and basic techniques of orchestration,
previous experience as an arranger.

Music notation paper, pencil, eraser, music stand and instrument.
History of Choro
Pedro Aragão and
Anna Paes
This course will present a panoramic view of choro's history
from the 19th century to the present. Classes are divided in
blocks about each historic period, with biographical descriptions
of the main composers, as well as analysis and music listening
sessions of the most representative pieces of each period.
There will also be videos and discussions about the role
played by musical scores archives in the spreading of choro.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
